Creating Better Connections: Empowering Farmers Through Data

26 of Nov 2024

Organic farmers have significantly benefited from existing certification systems, receiving hard copy files of their mapped farms and equipping them with the reports they need to successfully adhere to EU Deforestation Regulations. These farmers are well-informed about the data recorded on their land and are aware of national and international issues affecting their industry. However, their primary focus remains on farm work and family sustenance, leaving them less engaged with broader informational resources.

  • To address this gap, Three Mountains Cocoa has developed initiatives that empower farmers, leveraging their knowledge of the land and the data at hand to enhancing their ability to benefit from certification systems.

Cocobod has led an innovative mapping projects in the past, achieving significant milestones by creating detailed polygon maps for cocoa farmers. Building on this foundation, Three Mountains Cocoa has advanced the initiative by aligning with Organic and Rainforest data standards, developing state-of-the-art polygon maps and centerpin drop tools that better equip farmers to leverage their knowledge of the land and their data for certification benefits.

  • Empowering Farmers with Knowledge and Tools

Through the development of advanced mapping and data tools, Three Mountains empowers farmers with the precise information they need about the size and boundaries of their farms. Historically, many farmers lacked access to physical maps of their properties. Now, with these detailed resources, they can gain accurate insights and utilise this knowledge to meet various certification requirements effectively.

  • Streamlined Certification Processes

The next phase of this project involves extensive mapping and centralised data collection, unifying farmer data across all certification bodies. This streamlined approach ensures compliance with jurisdictional standards, making it easier for farmers to navigate and benefit from certification systems. By having precise and accessible data, farmers can enhance their productivity and marketability, ensuring their cocoa meets the highest standards of quality.

  • Overcoming Technological Barriers

A major challenge faced by farmers is the lack of technology and connectivity. Many do not possess the devices needed to store or access farm data, and those who do often encounter poor reception and lack of Wi-Fi, limiting their internet access. Three Mountains Cocoa is committed to addressing these barriers by providing the necessary technology and reliable internet connectivity, thereby enhancing farmers’ ability to access and utilise crucial information.

  • The Way Forward

With Three Mountains Cocoa’s support, farmers are now better connected and equipped to use their land knowledge and data effectively. This not only enhances their compliance with certification systems but also empowers them to improve their farming practices and achieve greater economic success.
